My first blog post!
As I reflect on my journey of reading novels aloud to my autistic daughters, Poppy and Amelia, I am filled with gratitude for the countless benefits it has brought into our lives. From language development and comprehension skills to literary appreciation and emotional connection, reading novels aloud has been a powerful tool for bonding, learning, and growing together.
In addition to the benefits I mentioned, novels have also played a crucial role in teaching valuable social skills and fostering empathy, communication, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence. By immersing ourselves in the lives of diverse characters and exploring their perspectives, we have gained a deeper understanding of the human experience and developed a broader worldview.
I encourage parents, caregivers, and educators to embrace the practice of reading novels aloud to children and individuals with autism. It may require some adjustments, such as incorporating movement or allowing for multiple reading partners, but the rewards are immeasurable.
Reading novels aloud not only strengthens language and cognitive abilities but also nurtures a love for reading, sparks imagination, and cultivates a lifelong passion for literature.
Building tolerance skills for listening to someone read aloud may take time for your child or student. Encourage them to gradually develop their listening and attentiveness.
For older children, consider setting goals like reading one page, one chapter, or starting with a 5-minute session, then gradually increasing the duration. Communicate with your child or student about your support in developing their listening skills and fostering the joy of reading.
In our personal journey, we have discovered the profound significance of reading books with characters who have disabilities. These books have a remarkable power to empower individuals and offer a glimpse into the lives of those who face similar struggles. They create a sense of relatability, igniting a deep belief in our own potential to overcome obstacles and achieve personal triumphs.
So, whether you're sitting on a cozy couch, strolling through a park, or embarking on a grand adventure, don't forget to bring a novel along and experience the magic of reading aloud together. Let the stories weave their spell, and watch as your bond deepens and your understanding of the world expands. Happy reading!

I’ve been loving books since I was a baby. Knowing magic, wonder, adventure and secrets have made me who I am.
My favourite childhood book is “The Faraway Tree” as it helped me with my imagination.
I’m currently reading through; “Red”, “Real” and “Everything I’ve Never Said”.
I’m lucky to have books.
They are my muse.

Novels are close to my heart. My favourite novel is ‘The Twits’ written by Roald Dahl. It's a wonderful book that teaches kindness.
I like having many books going at the same time. Now, I am reading though; ‘Red’, ‘The Rabbit Proof Fence’ & ‘Everything I’ve Never Said’.
Books make me smart, caring and brave.
