RPM is a method that empowers a student with the means to express their learning, understanding, reasoning and thoughts.
What is RPM?
-
Rapid Prompting Method, also called RPM or Soma®RPM, is a communication and skill development tool for autistic children and adults.
Soma Mukhopadhyay, whose son Tito is autistic and non-speaking, developed RPM in the 1990s to enable Tito to communicate and develop academically. Since then, Tito’s poetry and other writings have given us incredible insights into his experience of autism and the way he sees the world.
Soma®RPM has continued to expand and grow across the world. While RPM began as a method for non-speaking children, the techniques have been adapted for both children and adults with a range of complex speech behaviours.
-
Autistic children and adults often communicate in complex ways. They might not speak at all, use repetitive or seemingly random speech patterns, or vary from day to day.
Terms like “non-verbal autism” can be unhelpful. People with complex speech, whether children or adults, are often able to speak clearly and fluently – just in different ways. Complexities in verbal speech, issues with motor control or inability to perform certain activities don’t necessarily indicate an autistic person’s intelligence or attention.
The Rapid Prompting Method assumes that everyone has the capacity to learn, think and understand. RPM gives autistic people an avenue to communicate when typical speech is not available to them.
-
Using RPM, autistic children and adults can show their capacity for learning and develop their voice beginning with letterboard communication.
Like many teaching methods, RPM starts simply and increases in complexity as the student gains skills. Initially, the RPM facilitator shares information on a topic of interest and asks questions. The autistic person learns to first make choices, then, spell out their responses through pointing at a letters on a letterboard, letter stencil, using speech, or typing.
From there, RPM works with the student’s verbal and motor abilities to develop a customised skill-building program. This might include typing, handwriting, speech, hobbies and daily activities including building social connections.
The aim is for students to become more independent in communication and living skills, and to be able to participate in things that interest them. At Autism On Point, we’re happy to work with you or your child and help you achieve your goals.
Hi, I’m Liz Prountzos, founder of Autism On Point. I live in Melbourne with my husband, Kon, and our four amazing children. We’re lucky enough to be within walking distance from the beach – my happy place.
My passion for the Rapid Prompting Method started in my own family. Our two youngest children are both autistic, and RPM has been helpful for them in very different ways.
Amelia, our third child, is mainly non-speaking and was diagnosed with autism at 2.5. As she grew, I began thinking she needed more than what her existing therapies could give her.
RPM Isn’t Only for Non-Speaking Autistic People
I learned more about RPM through conferences, reading, and practice. I travelled to Austin, Texas for Amelia to work with Soma, and completed my Soma®RPM qualification.
As I got more familiar with this method, I realised it wasn’t only for autistic children who didn’t speak. Poppy, our youngest daughter, is also autistic but wouldn’t be called “non-verbal”. Poppy has complex speech, including scripting and echolalia (repeating words and phrases from other people, TV shows etc). She’s able to speak, but not always able to communicate the things she wants to say.
But with RPM, Poppy can speak to us fluently through pointing with the letterboard. It’s amazing to see how much more she has to say when she’s not stuck in the loops of her complex speech patterns.
You can see more about my training and experience with Soma®RPM below.
Finding Her Voice with RPM
When Amelia was 6, I discovered RPM and believed this was what we’d been missing. I read Soma’s books, studied everything I could find, and watched countless hours of video footage of RPM in action. I then started using RPM with Amelia at home.
From there, my interest in Soma®RPM continued to grow. A year after we started using it, Amelia and I went to an RPM camp in Sydney to work directly with Soma. I watched Amelia communicate through spelling and expressing herself as she made choices about what she was learning and understanding. That moment made me even more certain about this method.
We continue to use RPM with Amelia. She communicates via the RPM letterboard, but it’s much more than that – RPM lets Amelia show us how creative, quirky and bright she is. She’s also teaching us more about her experiences of the motor and sensory challenges she faces every day.
How Autism On Point Works
I provide RPM services with both children and adults. And I love what I do.
Autism On Point includes one-on-one sessions, individualised lesson plans, and learning support via phone or video sessions. I can work with you in my office in Melbourne, attend your child’s school, or travel to regional or interstate locations by arrangement. I also work with schools to introduce low-tech communication methods within a classroom environment.
Services may be funded through NDIS if they are in line with the autistic person's goals. See here for full pricing.
